Exams are not the End of Life! Life Beyond JEE-NEET

Nearly everyone is familiar with the pressure surrounding exams. From the early school years to higher education, exams are often viewed as the pivotal moments that determine success or failure. Competitive exams such as NEET-JEE in India, hold a prominent position not only in a student’s imagination but also in the larger culture. When a child prepares for exams such as NEET-JEE, their parents often have sleepless nights. Teachers and coaching institutes are always under pressure to produce stellar results, as they have to sustain in the ever-growing competitive market. To add to the drama, relatives, neighbours, and possibly even the local street vendor, may enquire how a child’s exam preparation is going. Thus when practically everyone around you seems to believe that your exams are the most crucial stepping stone in your life, then it’s quite understandable that you start thinking they are the be-all and end-all of your life.

Now the question arises: “why do people experience exam stress ?”, a general question among all teenagers. It could be that some of us feel that we need to live up to our parent’s unrealistic expectations. If you can try to discuss with them what they are expecting you to achieve because this will just add unnecessary pressure. It is helpful to let them know what you think you have the capacity to achieve and to insist that the only way to achieve it is to have their support. All students must remember that any competitive exam be it JEE-NEET is only one of many tests they will face in their life. This is not meant to scare you or make you think that you have to be jittery all the time. Like most things in life, we have to learn to take exams, at the school or collegiate level, in our stride and not get unduly tensed when an exam doesn’t go well. A little stress is good as it keeps oneself motivated but one should never let exam stress overcome themselves.

Some important tips for students:

  • Focusing on NCERT books: NCERT Books are considered very helpful for building a strong base of concepts and theories. Students must solve all NCERT exercise questions and must not forget to go through the solved examples. It is especially important for NEET aspirants to study the Biology NCERT book thoroughly, as most of the questions in NEET directly/indirectly come from NCERT.
  • Always choose the best reference book: Students preparing for JEE-NEET always need to go beyond NCERT books to get the best ranks in both these exams, so choosing the best reference book becomes very important.
  • Solving previous year’s questions and mock papers: If you are preparing for any competitive exam, the best way to check your preparedness is through solving PYQs in one sitting and then evaluating yourself. After completion of one topic, they should also solve mock papers based on that specific topic, in this way, they can find out their weaknesses.
  • Understanding the pattern of the exam: Before starting your preparation you should always have a clear understanding of the pattern of your exam. You should know which subject/topic has the highest weightage etc. And students should always focus more on those units that are more important from an examination point of view.
  • Attempting the question paper strategically: This is extremely important, since it can drastically affect the result. Students should first attempt the questions they feel most confident about. Like if you think you are best in chemistry then always start with the chemistry section, as initials marks fetching will boost your confidence and this will help you to solve other sections calmly.

Life beyond IIT-JEE/ NEET

Even if you didn’t clear the exam you don’t need to worry and always remember one thing, “IIT is not everything”. It’s not the IITs or AIIMS that make you successful, it’s the talent and the strong determination that makes you successful in your life. Many people see failing in IIT-JEE/ NEET as an ultimate failure in life. But it’s not like that. There are many people who couldn’t make themselves into IITs or AIIMS but still emerged very successful in their lives. For example – Satya Nadela. I think we all are aware of this name, right, but do you know he didn’t go to any IITs. Satya Nadela who served as the CEO of the tech giant Microsoft, was born in Hyderabad. He attended the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988 to complete his B.Tech in electrical engineering. In 1990, Nadella subsequently travelled to the U.S. to study for an M.S. in computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. I hope you all are feeling much better. Now let’s talk about one more inspiring story. The story of Major Madhan Kumar, a retired officer from the Indian Army who couldn’t make it through the medical entrance test but still did well in life.  Kumar lost NEET not once but twice with a margin of 9 marks and then by a margin of 7 marks. He even re-attempted his 12th exams to improve his score, however, he could not make it to an MBBS college. But he didn’t lose hope and later he cleared CDS and served the nation.

So don’t be hopeless if you didn’t get into an IIT or AIIMS, because there are many such people who have achieved a lot in their life without attending any of these top premiere institutes, because in the end only the self-motivation and determination make you successful.
